New Year New Goals

So the New Year is now upon us and it’s the time to sit down and plan for the year ahead.

Last year, with a major injury early on in the year, it took me a while to get back to my best. I still don’t think I am quite there yet, but I am getting close to full fitness.

It was a mixed year really, with some decent races and some not so good races. A highlight for me was the silver medal at the Northern Championship Road Relays at Sportcity, Manchester in September.  The main disappointment however, was dropping out of Frankfurt Marathon at 20 miles, but it was the right decision. Since then training has gone well and I have really put down a great aerobic base for 2018.

Last week I sat down with my coach Helen Clitheroe and planned out the first few months of the year. I still have big goals regarding what I would like to achieve and believe with the base built over the previous months and the training/racing plan we have, that 2018 could be my best year date. There is plenty of hard work to come and many miles to be run, but I am still hungry to succeed and achieve the goals I set myself.

The main target this winter/spring will be the London Marathon on 22nd April. I will be doing some ‘tune up’ races before then and hopefully winning some medals with my Salford team mates at the Regional and National Cross Country Championships and Norther/National Road Relays over the next couple of months. This time of year is my favourite for racing and training. Also, at the end of March, I will be doing some warm weather training in Portugal.

I am very grateful for the support Ribby Hall Village give me with my training and racing. The gym facilities are fantastic and play a big part in my training with my core exercises and leg strength work gym and recovery sessions in the jacuzzi, sauna and pool.

When my coach and I sat down to plan the next few weeks we discussed the importance of strength training as a key focus for me. Having these facilities on my door step and having their support is a massive help in helping me achieve my goals.

Happy New Year and all the best with goals in 2018, whatever they may be!  I hope to see many of you at local races on the Fylde Coast, including the Inskip Half Marathon on Sunday 21st January!
